Grenfell Tower Fire – Legal Support
Grenfell Tower Fire – Legal Support
The Black Solicitors Network (BSN) seeks to be the primary voice of solicitors of African Caribbean heritage. Membership is much broader and includes all ethnic groups and sections of the legal profession. It is the only large BME organisation that represents only solicitors and from time to time we have come together with other BAME lawyer groups on issues that concern the profession and provision of legal services.
In the aftermath of the Grenfell Tower fire tragedy, we have attended meetings with other BAME lawyer groups to discuss and try to coordinate response to this tragedy and offer support to the people affected, short of legal advice. The meetings have included survivors of the tragedy and their family members. BSN will support action that does not conflict with our core aims and strategies as agreed by the directors of BSN.
The community has been inundated with offers of help including legal advice. Locally, North Kensington Law Centre are coordinating this through use of volunteering management software and setting up a formal rota. They have indicated that the specialities sought are in housing, employment, immigration, welfare benefits, criminal law, personal injury, inquests, fire regulations, building controls, health and safety and public law. They have asked that anybody who wishes to offer volunteer support – be it legal or general volunteering – to please register using the appropriate link which you will find on their website www.nklc.co.uk instead of calling or emailing the Law Centre directly.
