Lambeth Council ‘Aim High’ primary school events

The BSN proudly supports Lambeth Council’s ‘Aim High‘ events to address the attainment gap for Lambeth’s young black Caribbean pupils.

The Black Solicitors Network supported Lambeth Schools Partnership’s (LSP) ‘Aim High‘ events by sourcing volunteers within law to run interactive career insight sessions with primary school students in Lambeth.

The ‘Aim High‘ events are part of LSP’s wider ‘Raising the Game‘ initiative to ultimately raise the academic achievement of black Caribbean pupils in Lambeth, for whom there is currently an attainment gap. The events were designed to provide the children with exposure of professional careers in Law, Medicine, Information Technology and Education.

Over 500 children from years 2-5 from various primary schools in Lambeth attended the events held throughout the first week of April, 2019. They met inspirational and highly-successful black professionals from the 4 different industries, learning about their careers and backgrounds. Children were able to interact with the volunteers by asking questions.

Feeding back on the success of the event, Ines Floris from LSP said “it was an extremely enjoyable week with lots of great feedback from the children and their teachers. Many teachers left feeling inspired themselves! We were able to obtain immediate feedback from many pupils; at the beginning of the session, a pupil said he wanted to be a boxer however, at the end of the session he said he wanted to be a doctor!“

Insights into professional careers can be invaluable to young students, who may not already have this exposure within their family networks. Career insights often build aspirations towards that career which can positively impact the student’s attainment as they work towards that career aspiration/goal.
