BBC A Black History of Britain – Invitation to an event 8th September

September 8, 2016 @ 4:30 pm - 9:00 pm

A BLACK HISTORY OF BRITAIN Granville Sharp Plaque Invite

Presented by Historian David Olusoga and made by the producer’s of the BAFTA-award winning ‘Britain’s Forgotten Slave-Owners’, this ambitious series will reveal 2,000 years of Black British History re-imagined and retold as the story of all of us.
As part of the series we are embarking on an ambitious project in which we are erecting heritage plaques across Britain and the world to commemorate key pivotal moments in this history. We are dedicating one of these plaques to the 18th century abolitionist campaigner Granville Sharp and the former slave, Jonathan Strong at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London.

In 1765, Sharp discovered Strong outside his brother’s house in the City of London, beaten to within an inch of his life by his master. Sharp then immediately undertook responsibility for Strong’s care and wellbeing admitting him to St Bartholomew’s Hospital where he stayed for four and a half months to recover. This experience led Sharp on a pathway that would see him dedicate his life’s work to reforming social injustice.

To celebrate this, we are holding a small unveiling ceremony at St Bartholomew’s Hospital on Thursday 8th September, from 16.30 and we would be delighted if you were able to attend? We’d also like to extend the invite to all members of the Black Solicitors Network. Unfortunately, we do not have many spaces available, therefore RSVP is necessary.

An attachment with the invitation to the event with further details but do feel free to contact me at mireia.oprey@bbc.co.uk if you have any questions.
