Salary: Salary group 7 £103,950. Please note however, that this is subject to evaluation.

For the first time, the Judicial Appointments Commission is now inviting applications for this position. The Lord Chancellor expects that the successful applicant will have a high level of expertise in criminal injuries compensation or personal injury law and some judicial experience, although not necessarily in these fields.

The successful applicant will be required to deal with the more complex and high profile cases involving a wide range of issues around the payment of compensation to people who have sustained injuries from violent crime. Some of the appellants will be among the most vulnerable members of society. Many will be without legal representation.

The Principal Judge will have leadership and management responsibilities that include giving guidance to, appraising and mentoring fee-paid judges and members, as well as planning and delivering an annual programme of judicial training. Allocating judges and members to appeals will be part of the overall responsibility to manage judicial resources. The successful applicant will work closely with senior managers of Her Majesty’s Courts and Tribunals Service to ensure a high standard of service to tribunal users.

This post is open to solicitors and barristers in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, advocates or solicitors in Scotland, and Chartered Legal Executives, with five years post qualification experience (PQE), or any person who in the Lord Chancellor’s opinion has gained experience in law which makes them as suitable for appointment as if they satisfied these criteria. The post is suitable for full-time or part-time (minimum 80%) working.

Please note: This post requires significant travel throughout Great Britain and therefore has no requirement to be based in a particular district.
