Following the appointment of Paul Philip as the new Chief Executive, the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) is looking to appoint its first General Counsel.

The SRA is the independent regulatory body of the Law Society of England and Wales, regulating over 160,000 solicitors and over 10,000 solicitors firms plus other entities providing legal services. Its role is to protect the public by ensuring that the highest standards of professional conduct are maintained. Based in Birmingham, with a staff of 650, it is currently in the midst of a major and exciting programme of regulatory reform and organisational change.

A key advisor to the Board and Chief Executive, the General Counsel will provide strong, visible leadership across the organisation, leading on the provision of legal advice, supporting policy development and legislative drafting. S/he will play a key role in driving forward organisational change, providing sound advice on legislative interpretation and reform, creating a capacity for strategic change and development within the SRA.


The successful candidate will be a qualified solicitor or barrister with senior experience in areas including public law, organisational governance, regulatory policy, information compliance and the UK legislative process. A broad and in-depth understanding of the impact of legal issues upon regulators will be beneficial. You will have a strong record of successful litigation and providing advice on complex legal questions, and be able to manage the unusually broad range of stakeholder relationships. You will also be able to lead and manage a team to deliver high-quality results to tight deadlines.
