The role
Salaried Judges of the Upper Tribunal, Immigration and Asylum Chamber deal with immigration appeals from the First-tier Tribunal and immigration judicial review applications. Successful candidates will be involved in reviewing specialist questions of law, presiding over appeal and judicial review hearings and determining paper applications arising from judicial review applications and statutory appeals. Where required, you will also sit as a non-presiding member of a panel of the Upper Tribunal or First-tier Tribunal.

The person
The Lord Chancellor expects that candidates for salaried positions will have sufficient directly relevant previous judicial experience. The meaning of “directly relevant experience” is sitting as a judge in a salaried or fee-paid capacity for at least two years or 30 sitting days. Only in exceptional cases and if the candidate in question has demonstrated the skills required in some other significant way would an exception be made.

The role
Fee-paid deputy judges are appointed primarily to assist in the disposal of statutory appeals. All fee-paid deputy judges of the Upper Tribunal are also judges of the First-tier Tribunal and may be deployed to undertake work there in suitable cases. Where required, you will also sit as a non-presiding member of a panel of the Upper Tribunal or First-tier Tribunal.

The person
The JAC welcomes applications from experienced solicitors and barristers with at least seven years post qualification experience (PQE).
